A late first-quarter surge proved decisive as the Pitt Meadows Marauders closed the opening frame with 11 straight points and never looked back in a 58-42 win over the Valleyview Vikes.
The victory came in the Select 16 Bracket championship final of the Tsumura Basketball Invitational Girls Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Langley Events Centre.
“I’m just really proud of how the group stayed with it and found ways to win, especially early in the tournament,” said Pitt Meadows head coach Jason Boyes. “Those first couple of games were tight, and the kids didn’t panic.”
After opening the event with a pair of narrow wins decided by a combined 10 points, the Marauders rounded into form, finishing the tournament with back-to-back victories by 16 and 17 points.
“It was about learning how to manage the game,” Boyes said. “Not getting too high, not getting too low. Over the four days, they got better at reading what the moment called for — when to slow it down and when to push the pace.”
Select 16 MVP Jocelyn Boyes led Pitt Meadows with 18 points, while Evelyn Perler added 14 and earned Player of the Game honours. Kaydence McCaw chipped in 11, giving the Marauders three players in double figures.
Valleyview was paced by Claire McLoughlin with 18 points, and Sameera Gill added nine.

The Argyle Pipers showed their depth and composure when it mattered most, pulling away for a victory in the Tsumura Basketball Invitational Girls Tournament Super 16 Bracket championship final on Saturday at Langley Events Centre.
Argyle controlled the first half, leading throughout and taking a 10-point advantage into the break. Riverside made its push early in the third quarter, opening the half on a 19-8 run to briefly swing momentum. But the Pipers responded with poise, closing the quarter on a decisive 17-5 surge to reclaim control and set the tone for the remainder of the game.
“We were tied in the third and the message was simple,” said Argyle head coach Anthony Beyrouti. “Stay focused, execute defensively and take care of the basketball. If we play fundamentally, focused and disciplined, good things will happen — and they took care of business.”
Despite having just eight players available, Argyle received contributions across the lineup, with every Piper finding the scoresheet.
“We went eight deep all week,” Beyrouti said. “They really took care of the basketball, we shared it and got everyone involved, which was really cool to see.”
Argyle’s Isabella Miljkovic was named Tournament MVP after scoring 24 points in the final, while Eva Woodward earned Player of the Game honours with 23. Riverside was led by Francesa Salonga with 18 points, and Henna Virk added 12.
