Aug 26, 2014
For the eighth time in nine years, the Minto Cup champions were crowned from the East, as the Six Nations Arrows captured the 2014 Minto Cup. The Minto Cup is awarded to the best junior ‘A’ lacrosse team in Canada.
The Arrows defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs in six games. Six Nations was led by their captain and three time National Lacrosse League champion, Johnny Powless. Powless was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scoring 29 points in six games. Eli McLaughlin had a team high 22 points for the Adanacs.
In what was being touted as a long, physical series, featuring the best team in the East versus the best team in the West, lived up to its’ hype. Coquitlam jumped out to a 2-0 series lead, thanks to some stellar goaltending and timely goals. Six Nations regrouped and looked like a completely different team the rest of the way, winning four straight games to claim their third Minto Cup championship (1992 and 2007 being the others).
This was the first time that the event had been hosted at the Langley Events Centre (a neutral site). In total, 9,516 people came through the doors of the LEC over the course of the week.
“This series saw the best two teams go at it, in one of best facilities both teams have played in,” said Coquitlam head coach Neil Doddridge. “The crowds were great all series, they were vocal and knowledgeable.”
“My hats off to the fans,” said Arrows head coach Marshall Abrams. “They came out and supported us and Coquitlam. This was a world class facility to play in.”
In addition to the fans inside the LEC, there were 1,787 people who watched online.
In the six games of the Minto Cup, Langley Minor Box and Field Lacrosse was at each one, raising money through the 50/50 draws held. In total, the local association raised $9,476.00.
“We’re honoured and privileged that the Langley Events Centre thought enough of us to include us,” said Langley Minor Lacrosse Box President Brock Rose. “I can’t speak enough of the people that made the event possible and we were fortunate enough to be a part of it.”
