Canada to Meet USA in the NORCECA Final

Sep 27, 2013

The dream final is set for Canada as they defeated Cuba 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) and will face the USA in Saturday night’s final at 8pm. There were over 2000 screaming fans that turned out for Canada’s Friday night victory at the Langley Events Centre, with more expected for the Canada USA final tomorrow night.

Canada was a blocking machine in their semi-final win against Cuba, they had 16 blocks as a team. Gord Perrin and Rudy Verhoeff combined for 10 total blocks and they both led the way for Canada with 14 points apiece. There were points of the match where it just seemed like every time Perrin and Verhoeff went up to block they were getting touches and the Cubans had no answer. Canada had contribution from everyone again tonight and Dallas Soonias in particular who put together another strong offensive performance adding 11 kills in the win.

Canada will face the USA for the first time since losing to them in the 2012 Olympic qualifier last year. The goal for Canada long before this tournament started was to beat the USA and with the win tonight they’ve set up the final they’ve long been hoping for.

Team Canada has had an impressive summer thus far and a win tomorrow night would be the perfect story book ending to their summer. Canada has never won a gold at the NORCECA Championships and tomorrow night they have a chance to do it in front of home crowd that has been giving them an extra boost each night. Come out and be a part of history as Canada and the USA will hit the court at 8pm tomorrow night for the gold medal at the LEC.
