NLL Champion Crowned in Front of Packed House at LEC

May 13, 2013

The National Lacrosse League season came to an end this past Saturday at the Langley Events Centre, with the visiting Rochester Knighthawks defeating the Washington Stealth 11 – 10 to win their second consecutive NLL Champions Cup, presented by Reebok. The game marked the third time in the last two and a half years that the professional lacrosse league has made a stop in Langley at the LEC; however this was the first time a trophy was on the line.

The ‘championship element’ proved to add an extra level of energy to the facility, and the game, as the crowd was exuberant from start to finish, even in spite of the home team’s defeat,

“That was what a championship game should be,” Stealth President David Takata was proud of his team’s efforts, “the crowd got to see a great game and a great event.”

From the facility side, the game was another tremendous success. The Party on the Plaza presented by Save On Foods and More Rewards created a great pre game location for fans to congregate before face off. The facility reached its 5200 person capacity with fans enjoying the game from the glass seats up to the 24 private suites located on the fourth floor. Concession sales were amongst the highest in the history of the facility.

The community also received a boost as many fans attending the game were from out of province, here to support the Washington Stealth. Hotels in the area, including the host hotels Sandman and Sandman Signature, were booked near capacity to accommodate the extra visitors. The BC Lacrosse Association received the proceeds of the largest ever pot awarded at an LEC event ($3000) to help support Team BC.

“It was a great event to be a part of and host here in the Township of Langley,” LEC Director of Business Development Jared Harman said it was great to see the entire BC lacrosse community come out and show their support for the game and the NLL product.

Although the NLL has wrapped up its season, lacrosse will be alive and well at the LEC as the Western Lacrosse Association home opener for the Langley Thunder is next Wednesday, May 22 at 7:45PM.
