Walnut Grove Captures 68th Annual BC AAA Boys High School Basketball Championship

Mar 20, 2013

It was a fitting end to the BC high school boys basketball season as the White Rock Christian Academy Warriors and the Walnut Grove Gators finished their season in the same venue it started just three months prior. Both teams started their season as part of the First Annual Tsumura Basketball Invitational, taking on Findlay Prep from Las Vegas, Nevada, and as predicted by Province columnist (and tournament namesake) Howard Tsumura, both teams advanced to the Championship game of the 2013 BC AAA Boys High School Basketball Championship, presented by TELUS.

Walnut Grove would avenge the heartbreaking loss they suffered on the same court one year prior (to 2012 Champions, Terry Fox), by defeating the Warriors by a score of 59 – 53 in another instant classic at the LEC. Led by star grade 11 guard, and tournament MVP, Jadon Cohee, the Gators held the lead for most of the game, save for a late run by White Rock Christian Academy which tied the contest at 53. The late run did little more than re-energize the raucous crowd of 4,443 fans who were treated to a great showcase for the game of basketball in our province.

Overall the event was another success, exceeding the expectations set by the year prior yet again. In total, 15,648 people came through the doors at the Langley Events Centre to watch the tournament. In addition to the fans inside the facility, there were 25,635 (4,584 on the final day alone) people who watched online. Both the total attendance and viewership of the tournament exceeded the previous years it has been hosted at the LEC.
