LEC Adding Facilities
Aug 31, 2012
Since opening in the spring of 2009, the Langley Events Centre has gained a reputation as a unique, world class facility. Now the LEC is building on that success by adding a facility that will accommodate more sporting events and programs, and create more space for current and additional community and provincial partners.
“The expansion of the Langley Events Centre is being undertaken to accommodate the large demand for additional sports and entertainment programming we experience at the facility from Langley and the surrounding areas” explained Jared Harman, Director of Business Development. “Currently games, tournaments, events or provincial team training are held almost every weekend of the year here at the LEC, and this new facility will allow even more to occur”.
An ambitious construction timeline has been set so that the new facility can be used in March of 2013, in time for the LEC’s two busiest months of events and championships. The detailed finishes will be completed before the summer and the facility fully operational for the start of the high school and university school year and sports seasons in September of 2013.
A double gymnasium, an indoor turf/dry floor facility and additional change room, storage, and support space (see attached floor plan) will be constructed immediately east of the existing LEC building on Township-owned land with a budget of up to $7.725 million to complete the project.
Adding two more gymnasiums will enhance the number and size of events being held in Langley, and the new facility will host numerous youth and high school events that to date have not been accommodated. The addition of dry floor and turf space will also allow community teams to practice and begin their seasons in the same location, and under the same conditions in which they play their games.
Also, as a result of the additional space and flexibility created by the addition, new event partners who will be joining the Langley Events Centre partnership include Wrestling BC, the BC Lacrosse Association, Volleyball BC and Volleyball Canada, and other community or provincial sporting organizations to be announced.
The LEC will host a number of Wrestling BC events beginning in the 2012-13 season. Wrestling BC Executive Director Penny Gardner looks forward to the opportunity,
“BC Wrestling is excited to hear of the recent facility expansion announcement. We see a fantastic opportunity to improve the standard of our fixture events and enhance the quality of provincial programs with the exceptional amenities and services that the Langley Events Centre has to offer.”
The addition of an available year round indoor turf facility combined with the three artificial turf fields at Willoughby Community Park provide a unique opportunity for the BCLA to feature both field lacrosse and box lacrosse in one location, as highlighted by Sohen Gill, BCLA President,
“The BC Lacrosse Association is extremely excited about the new opportunities that Langley's additional facilities will present for our membership. We have a tremendous relationship with the LEC, and adding a dry surface facility will provide a venue to host some of the best lacrosse players in BC with national, provincial and local team programs and events in Langley.”
The additional space for the Langley Events Centre joins two other projects already underway in the area. In the south portion of Willoughby Community Park, a new park field house is being constructed in partnership with the Langley United Soccer Association. And in the area immediately east of the community tennis facility, additional parking spaces are being added in partnership with RE Mountain Secondary School and the Langley School District.
