2011 WJAC Host to Future NHL Draft Picks

Apr 16, 2012

The 2011 World Junior ‘A’ Hockey Challenge, held at the Langley Events Centre last November, had a major impact on the Township of Langley and the surrounding communities. As it turns out, it may also have a substantial impact on the upcoming 2012 National Hockey League Draft. NHL Central Scouting Services (NHL CSS) recently released its final rankings for the upcoming draft and forty players and goalies that competed in the week long tournament at the LEC have been listed as NHL top prospects. The list is highlighted by the top two (and four of the top six) ranked European goaltenders. Most notable is the top ranked European goalie, Andrei Vasilevski of Russia, who also starred at the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships that were held just over a month after the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge. Vasilevski generated quite the buzz throughout the tournament both for his early heroics and his near collapse against the Canadians in the semi finals before Russia captured Silver.

Both Team Canada West and Team Canada East were well represented on the list with ten players ranked (Canada West – 6, Canada East – 4) between the two squads. There were twenty-two players listed from the European clubs (Czech Republic, Russia and Sweden) with Sweden capturing the most spots with ten players (including both of their goalies).

Here is the complete list of players who participated in the 2011 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge at the Langley Events Centre that were ranked by NHL Central Scouting Services in their season ending edition:
