Dec 02, 2010

There is fun for all this weekend at the Langley Events Centre as Hockey Night In Canada’s Hyundai Hockey Nation makes its first stop, as they travel across the country, in Langley with special guests including Ken Hitchcock and Ron Davidson. With high school and university basketball action featuring Trinity Western University and hockey action from the Spartans and Chiefs this weekend will be packed!

The action starts Friday with the Battle of the Fraser Valley High School Basketball Showcase at 2pm with round one of Trinity Western Spartans Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams taking on their rivals from just up the freeway, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades later that evening. The women will tip off at 6pm Friday night and look to get back on track after a string of losses to start the season. The men, on the other hand, will look to continue their current eight game winning streak against which has seen them rise to the top of the CIS rankings. Senior Tyrell Mara was recently named CIS Player of Week and will be front and centre of this weekend’s action. Both the women’s and men’s teams will go at it again Saturday night, at 5pm and 7pm, respectively.

The Spartans are also taking to the ice inside Arena Bowl at the Langley Events Centre on both Friday and Saturday as their men’s hockey team has back to back home games against the University of Victoria. It will be the first time the two teams meet this season with the Spartans riding a high after defeating Iowa State (NCAA Division III) last weekend in an exhibition contest. The first of the two games goes Friday night at 7pm and the second Saturday at 3pm. Directly following the Saturday game the Spartans hockey team will be hosting a Skate with the Spartans where fans of the team can join the players on the ice in a free public skate.

Hockey Night In Canada’s Hyundai Hockey Nation outdoor festival opens at 7am on Saturday morning outside the LEC until 3pm, with sold out clinics on the ice from 8am to 2pm. Come watch the Hyundai Hockey Nation Clinics from the stands free of charge and enjoy the outdoor festival which includes Hockey Night in Canada Photo Booth, Hyundai Cargo Challenge, Hockey Shoot Out Game, Bubble Hockey, Street Hockey and Hyundai Test Drives! If you can’t make it Saturday, we do it all over again on Sunday same times, same place.

On Sunday, the Langley Chiefs Annual Teddy Bear Toss will take centre stage as the local BCHL club takes on their rivals from Nanaimo. The two longest tenured coaches in the BCHL (Harvey Smyl, Langley; Bill Bestwick, Nanaimo) meet for the second time this season, the first in Langley. Fans are asked to bring stuffed animals to the game and when the Chiefs score their first goal – throw them on the ice! All stuffed animals will be donated to the Salvation Army to go to less fortunate children during the holiday season. Game time is 3pm and tickets are still available at the Langley Events Centre Box Office or online at After the game enjoy a free public skate with the Langley Chiefs!
